New Emissions' Procedures

To meet EPA regulations each new on-highway vehicle is equipped with an emissions control monitor (ECM) and an exhaust treatment system. Included is a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which requires service when trapped particles in the exhaust system build up.

Engine exhaust passes through the DPF which traps diesel by-products. The particulate matter accumulates in the filter which is monitored by the ECM. The trapped particulates are removed by regenerating the DPF. The ECM senses when regeneration is needed and will attempt to initiate automatic regeneration when possible. Othewise it is necessary for the driver to perform a "stationary" regenernation. Not performing a "stationary" regeneration when required, the engine must then be shut down until it can be serviced by an authorized dealer.

These units now have emissions related warning lights and controls in the cab. The driver must heed these warnings and perform the new procedures or extensive damage to the engine will result. In addition to using ultra low sulfur diesel, this and other special maintenance requirements are detailed here.
